This trip will take you on an exciting 8 days in Bhutan. You will experience beautiful scenery, learn about the culture, and have fun! You will begin your journey in Jaigaon, before travelling through Thimphu (the capital city), Phobjikha Valley (a wonderful glacial area) and then down to the agricultural lands of Punakha Valley. Some of the highlights of your trip will be visiting some of Bhutan’s famous monasteries, scenic mountain passes and enjoying some of Bhutan’s culture (visiting farms and hot stone baths). The last stop on your trip will be an incredible hike to Tiaki’s Monastery, also called the “Tiger’s Nest”, which will be a great experience of beauty, spiritual awakening, and connection to Bhutanese locals.  Enjoy your journey!

Detailed Itinerary:

Day 1: The Gateway to the Dragon Kingdom

  • Arrival: Pickup from Bagdogra Airport (IXB) or NJP Railway Station. Drive through the tea gardens of Dooars to the Bhutan border town, Jaigaon/Phuentsholing.
  • Activity: Complete immigration biometrics.
  • Evening “Welcome Tea” at a local riverside cafe in Phuentsholing to discuss the week ahead.
  • Stay: Phuentsholing (Hotel Orchid or similar).

Day 2: The Ascent to the Capital

  • Journey: Drive to Thimphu (approx. 5-6 hours). The road winds from tropical vegetation to alpine forests.
  • Sightseeing: Stop at Kharbandi Gompa. Visit Tashichho Dzong (Fortress of the Glorious Religion) in the evening to see the lighting and the King’s administrative seat.
  • Stay: Thimphu (City Center Hotel).

Day 3: Thimphu Cultural Immersion

  • Morning: Visit Buddha Dordenma (Giant Buddha) for a bird’s-eye view of the valley. Visit the Takin Preserve to see Bhutan’s national animal.
  • Afternoon: Visit the Simply Bhutan Museum for an interactive cultural experience (archery, local wine tasting).
  • Evening: Free time to explore Norzin Lam (main street) for handicrafts.
  • Stay: Thimphu.

Day 4: Into the Glacial Valley (Phobjikha)

  • Journey: Drive to Phobjikha via Dochula Pass (3,100m). Stop for coffee and 108 Chortens views.
  • Activity: Arrive in Phobjikha, a vast U-shaped glacial valley. Visit Gangtey Monastery.
  • Nature Walk: Walk the Gangtey Nature Trail (1.5 hours, easy) through pine forests and open meadows. This is one of the most beautiful short hikes in Bhutan.
  • Stay: Phobjikha (Hotel with wood-burning heaters or Farmstay option).

Day 5: The Golden Valley of Punakha

  • Journey: Drive back down to the warmer Punakha valley (2.5 hours).
  • Activity: Visit the majestic Punakha Dzong located at the confluence of the Pho and Mo rivers.
  • Adventure: Walk across the 160m Punakha Suspension Bridge (great for photos).
  • Short Hike: Hike to Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten (45 mins uphill) for the best view of the rice paddies.
  • Stay: Punakha/Wangdue.

Day 6: Paro & The Watchtower

  • Journey: Drive to Paro via the river route.
  • Activity: Visit the National Museum (Ta Dzong) shaped like a conch shell. Visit Rinpung Dzong.
  • Visit a local farmhouse for a Traditional Hot Stone Bath (Dhotsho) to relax your muscles before the big hike tomorrow.
  • Stay: Paro.

Day 7: The Tiger’s Nest Finale & Return

  • Morning: Early hike to Taktsang Monastery (Tiger’s Nest). It’s a steep climb but the view of the monastery clinging to the cliff is the ultimate reward.
  • Afternoon: Drive back to Phuentsholing.
  • Stay: Phuentsholing.

Day 8: Departure

  • Logistics: Breakfast and transfer to Bagdogra/NJP for your onward journey.
