Here’s an itinerary for 8 days in Bhutan that will take you quickly through the most beautiful valleys and cities of the country, including Paro, Thimphu, Phobjikha Valley, Punakha, and Haa Valley. Visitors hike to its famous monasteries, dzongs and mountain passes, traversing the natural beauty and heritage of Bhutan. The journey culminates in the iconic hike to Tiger’s Nest Monastery, one of Bhutan’s most beautiful sites.
Day 1
Paro – Thimphu
Arrival and The Capital Seat
> Arrival at Paro and scenic 1-hour drive to Thimphu.
> Visit Tashichho Dzong, the seat of the government and the monastic body.
> Stop by Buddha Point for a panoramic view of the valley and the glant Buddha statue.
> Visit the National Memorial Chorten, a sacred monument dedicated to the third King of Bhutan.
Day 2
Thimphu – Phobjikha
High Passes to the Crane Valley
> Continue sightseeing in Thimphu, visiting places not covered on Day 1.
> Drive to Phobjikha Valley (3-4 hours drive), famous for being the home of the endangered Black-Necked Cranes.
> Stop at Dochula Pass (3,140 meters) for stunning views of the Himalayas and visit the Dochula Chorten.
> If time allows, visit Wangdue Phodrang Dzong enroute to Phobjikha.
> Overnight stay in Phobjikha.
Day 3
Phobjikha
Exploring Phobjikha Valley
> Spend the day hiking through the serene glacial landscapes of Phobjikha.
> Observe the Black-Necked Cranes (in season) in their natural habitat.
> Visit the 17th-century Gangtey Monastery and take a nature walk through the valley.
Day 4
Phobjikha – Punakha
Descend to Punakha
> Drive to Punakha (2-3 hours) through lush mountain scenery.
> Visit Chimi Lhakhang, the famous Temple of Fertility located in the countryside.
> Explore the magnificent Punakha Dzong, situated at the confluence of the Pho and Mo Chhu rivers.
Day 5
Punakha – Haa Valley
The Hidden Haa Valley
> Drive to the secluded Haa Valley (4-5 hours), known for its untouched scenic beauty.
> Visit Lhakhang Karpo (The White Temple), a sacred site in the region.
> Enjoy an authentic farm stay experience to interact with local families and witness rural life.
Day 6
Haa – Paro
Across Chelela to Paro
> Drive to Paro via Chelela Pass (2-hour drive), which offers spectacular views of the mountains and valleys.
> Stop at Chelela Pass to enjoy the breathtaking views.
> Visit the National Museum of Bhutan in Paro to learn about the rich cultural heritage of Bhutan.
> Explore Paro Dzong (Rinpung Dzong), one of the most iconic and well-preserved dzongs in Bhutan.
> Visit Kichu Lhakhang, one of the oldest and most important temples in Bhutan.
> Evening free time to relax in Paro town.
Day 7
Paro
The Tiger’s Nest Hike
> Hike to Tiger’s Nest Monastery (Taktsang), perched on a cliffside (approximately 4-5 hours hike).
> Evening leisure time to relax and explore Paro town at your own pace.
Day 8
Onward Journey
Departure
> Transfer to Paro Airport for departure.
