- Assisting with farming in either the rice or garden areas.
- Assisting with daily activities (i.e., caring for animals or performing various tasks around the home).
- Collecting wood for the fireplace or cooking food for your family and friends.
- Participating in spinning prayer wheels or going to morning prayer services.
- Walking from village to village through fields and along trailways through the forests.
In this lifestyle, there is little urgency and no set schedule — it’s just simply life occurring organically over time.
Home-Cooked Bhutanese Cuisine
Food is part of the culture in Bhutan, and you will be able to see that as well.
- You will know where your food is grown by experience.
- Fresh, locally grown foods
- Traditional Bhutanese dishes such as Ema Datshi, Kewa Datshi, Jasha Maru, and seasonal vegetables and fruits cooked over traditional cuisine.
- You will experience opportunities to cook with a traditional family-style meal.
You will have the opportunity to eat together, to learn about each other’s background and tradition, and to make lasting connections, just like in a Bhutanese home.
Cultural Exchange & Community Connection
When you spend time staying with a local family, you will gain insight into:
- Simple living, being content, and being kind to others are Bhutanese values.
- Daily life, manners, and religion for the people living in this area.
- The different festivals that take place in Bhutan (including religious ceremonies) and the various ways that people gather with each other throughout the year (seasonal).
- The traditional crafts of those people: weaving, agriculture, household ritual.
The hospitality of Bhutanese families toward their guests means that guests are accepted not just as ‘tourists’ but as friends and family members.
